Numb Thumb - Nerve Damage?

The pad and side of my thumb has been numb for about 10 hours now, ever since I shut a door, putting a lot of pressure on the handle on the area where my thumb meets my palm. It wasn't painful, but I did feel a bit of a weird jolt through my hand as it happened, and then my thumb went numb. It hasn't gotten any better or worse since then. Could this possibly be permanent, or is there anything I could be doing to make this better faster?
