Injured thumb pain relief?

Yesterday my thumb got stuck at a door knob space, and it pulled away some skin. I was bleeding much, and I was able to control it after applying pressure and some anti-hemorrhagic (stop bleeding) powder. Now I am just using some antibiotic cream to cover the wound. I have a lot of pain in my thumb, affecting also the rest of my hand. Is this normal? What are some home remedies for pain relief? Can I use ice to soothe my finger?
