Should I tell the readers or should I just let them figure it out themselves?

In the first chapter of my story, it ends at night. I mentioned it was getting dark when she was walking home and a little later she's outside at a festival where there are hanging lanterns all around to light the town square. Well, the next chapter starts with her waiting for her friends and it's clearly daylight. Should I mention it's the next morning or not? This is a children's story and I don't want to confuse anyone. Advice? Thanks.
