Why do I need a Federal tax ID to open a wireless merchant account for credit card machine?

I thought about opening up a small business and I called NAB company for a credit card machine and an account. One of the questions was what is my federal tax ID so I just wanted to know what is NAB doing with that number. Are they going to report the feds that I have a business or what???
